Demand for online education apps rocketed in the first week of the Spring term as schools were forced to close and go online for lessons under new coronavirus restrictions, according to app tracker Airnow.


Downloads of Zoom and other meeting apps soar in 2020


The period between December 24 and 31 is usually the busiest time for new devices to come online and to begin downloading apps.

Downloads of meeting apps soared in 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns, according to research group Airnow.

In the US, Zoom saw an increase of 72.3mln downloads (53mln Apple; 19.3mln Android), mobile game Among Us jumped by 38mln (28.7mln Apple; 9.3mln Android) while TikTok added 31.9mln downloads (27.6mln Apple; 4.3mln Android).

Airnow PLC has released data showing the downloads of online shopping and package tracking apps in both the UK and the US as the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic forced people to rely on e-commerce for their retail needs over the festive period.


Black Friday bargain hunting drives surge in downloads says app tracker Airnow


On Android phones, fashion, jewellery and beauty app Cute recorded an incredible 86,000 new users.

Britons downloaded thousands of apps ahead of the annual Black Friday shopping spree according to analysis from app tracking specialist Airnow PLC.

Non-essential shops were closed due to the second COVID-19 lockdown, which pushed even more shoppers to use their mobile phones to get the best deals, said Airnow.

In the seven days leading up to Black Friday (27th November), Apple iPhone downloads of Spanish clothing brand Massimo Dutti jumped 637%, jeweller Carrie Elizabeth saw a 231% rise over the previous week while Zara and Nike downloads increased by 36,000 and 34,000 across the UK, or 136% and 114% respectively.
